How to Optimize Your Education

I was asked by a reader for recommendations on universities that specialize in “wealth management” or “investment banking” studies.

It is difficult to give specific recommendations as there are so many variables that go into the right choice for each different individual. Cost, courses offered, area of specialization, distance from home, friends, location, commute, extracurricular activities, etc. All these play a part in determining the best option for a student.

And, as she is based in Singapore, my direct knowledge of universities in the region is limited. If any readers have advice, please leave a comment.

However, I can provide a few general comments on where and what to study.

The Case For Elite Universities

In Finding the “Best” University, we looked at criteria used to rate educational institutions.

While what is “best” is highly debatable, the cost of an education is more straightforward. And the elite universities are expensive compared to lesser name schools.

Is the payback on your investment worth the price? Will attending Yale provide you with a better long term career; so that the extra income you generate is worth the added cost of the school?

This post will look at the case for attending a prestigious institute. (more…)

Finding the “Best” University

I was asked for my thoughts as to whether the benefits of attending an Ivy League university are worth the high cost.

A good question. I am not sure there is a right answer to this, but I can give you my opinion.

Although the questioner asked about the Ivy League, I believe he meant elite schools as a whole.

In this post, we will highlight the “best” schools, the methodology used to rank them, and the criteria I would use to assess schools.

Later we will consider the actual cost-benefit issue. (more…)
